As you read this, I am either lying on a beach or enjoying some great jazz on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.  Now that is not my point today, but it paints the picture of what came to mind as I wrote this.  I say it a lot, but the number one thing I see with business owners is that they do not take any time to themselves to just unhinge from the business.

I learned this lesson in Corporate America and have translated it to my own small business.  How good do you think your business is if you are not rested and rejuvenated? How much creativity do you think you can have if you never let your brain stop with the day to day of the business?  The number one reason small businesses fail is because they have no vision – and I see that people have one when they start, but then they lose focus due to everything else we have to deal with when we own a business.

The first thing I notice when I take time off is my vision for the business becomes clear again.  It doesn’t mean it can’t change because experience can cause it to change (and that is ok!)  When the “stuff” comes at us we don’t have time to think at a higher level.

So while I am on the high seas, you know what I am thinking about…and also what I am not thinking about!
